While all welding schools have their very own curriculum and course content there are certain things that will be covered in all courses that are of good enough quality. This is the most fundamental theory that you will need to acquire and pay close attention to. You will learn a good bit of chemistry and physics by being introduced to the atomic structure of different ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys commonly found in different industries. You will be exposed to the physics of phase transformation and heat flow, which will mainly be covered in theory.
This is the first part of any course where you will see the metallurgy theory put into practice. Welding in general involves joining and/or cutting metals and alloys at different levels of precision and there are many different ways to achieve certain goals. You will see your first introduction to the different pieces of equipment and how they are used in different applications. This course will also cover the basics of the equipment including set up and maintenance.
Once you have become familiar with different tools and equipment you are ready to really get into the details. Many people not familiar with welding have no idea how many different welding techniques there are. To name just a few there is shielded metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, fusion/braze welding, electric arc cutting and oxy-fuel cutting. This part of the course will have a really heavy practical focus drawing on the theory learned so far.
This one part that is often underappreciated. When you are called onto a welding job the first thing you will be presented with is the task and most likely a design document. This document will tell you exactly what an architect or engineer, for example, want to get produced. It is very important that you fully understand different design document aspects in order to become an effective and efficient welder with a successful career.
The last 20 years have shown huge changes in industrial production processes with the use of automatic and semi-automatic robots becoming ever more common. If you were to visit a modern automotive factory you will see large welding robots instead of people for the majority of welding work. However, those robots need to be programmed and supervised to ensure they are working as expected and most courses will cover the robotic aspects.
Welding two pieces of metal together is easy, but doing it to a high level of quality is a whole different matter. There are numerous welding industry codes that you will have to learn and quality control is a hugely important factor. For one, the quality of a weld will determine the structural integrity, which makes it very important for safety reasons. But there is also the visual impact to consider with a lot of welding being done at high a precision level in order for the materials to appear seamless.
This is an extremely important part of any welding course and you will find that there will be a lot of emphasis on this module. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, the equipment you use as a welder is extremely dangerous with high voltages and flammable materials constantly in use there are very real concerns for serious injury and long term physical problems. In addition, many welding jobs will be in pretty dangerous circumstances, for example underwater, on high-rise construction sites and even demolition work.
We recommended however that you pick a course that does cover this technique as it will increase your employability and will give you exposure to a very advanced form of welding often used in the technology industry.
